Evacuation, means of rapid egress from a building or area, primarily intended for use in case of fire or other hazards. Several types have been used; a knotted rope or rope ladder secured to an inside wall; an open iron stairway on the building’s exterior, an iron balcony; a chute; and an enclosed fire- and smokeproof stairway

In 1990, India managed to evacuate more than 110,000 citizens from Iraq and Kuwait via an airlift that included nearly 500 flights.

Symptoms from many inhalation exposures take up to 12 hours to appear. Therefore, running during an evacuation can led to falls, resulting in injuries and obstructions

Stanley Forman won a Pulitzer Prize for the photograph capturing two girls plunging from a faulty fire escape, the controversial image resulted in tougher fire safety codes.
